Commodore PC-1 Restoration Kit Instructions

AutumnHippo's restoration kit for the Commodore PC-1 contains the following parts:

  • 8 pcs quality Panasonic capacitors
  • 1 pc PC speaker/beeper with wire
  • 1 pc system reset switch with wire
  • 1 pc two-sided adhesive tape for PC speaker
  • 4 pcs rubber feet for case

Instructions

All of these steps are optional, and you may choose to only complete some of them.

  1. Locate any broken capacitors on the PC-1 (may be leaking, bulging). De-solder these, taking note of their orientation. Solder in a replacement capacitor, making sure the stripe down the capacitor points in the same direction as did the old. The stripe must point in the opposite direction as the corner marking of the square on the board. Replacing all 8 capacitors, and not just the broken ones, is recommended. The 8 capacitor locations are marked on the main board as ”C300” to ”C307”.

  2. Locate the connector labelled ”J6” in the left side of the main board. The connector has four pins, whereof pin 3 is clipped off. Connect the two PC speaker/beeper leads to pins 1 and 2. Orientation is not important. Use the small piece of two-sided adhesive tape to attach the PC speaker onto the inside of the case.

  3. You can connect the system reset switch to pins 2 and 4 of the same connector (”J6”). Optionally drill a 7.2 mm hole in the case and mount the switch, preferably on the side of the case, out of sight as to not ruin the original look and feel of the computer. Remember to place the switch within reach of the wires, or alternatively provide your own longer wires.
Note: In case you want both the PC speaker and the reset switch (both use pin 2 of the ”J6” connector), you can solder one of the switch leads to the leg of the PC speaker which will be connected to pin 2.

  4. Attach the 4 rubber feet to the underside of the computer case. If you need to remove remnants of old rubber feet, this can be done effectively with cleaning alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) and a cotton bud.

Good luck with restoring your classic Commodore computer!
